Digital Content Component (DCC)

A self-descriptive unit which encapsulates any kind of content. Its subjacent model is a convergence of digital library's complex object model and software component model in order to afford both digital content and executable software in the same basic unit.

Road map

Foundations

There are two main introductory papers, which are complementary.

The first one provides an overview, describing the DCC, its model and infrastructure (Fluid Web):

A Component Model and Infrastructure for a Fluid Web (IEEE). André Santanchè and Claudia Bauzer Medeiros IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering - Vol. 19, N. 2. February 2007.

The second one focus aspects related to interface, authoring and the mechanism of content-driven execution:

User-author centered multimedia building blocks (Springer). André Santanchè and Claudia Bauzer Medeiros and Gilberto Zonta Pastorello Jr. Multimedia Systems - Vol. 12, N. 4-5. March 2007.

Discovery and Matching

The following paper describes how DCC's semantic enriched interfaces are explored in discovery and matching algorithms:

Self Describing Components: Searching for Digital Artifacts on the Web (pdf). André Santanchè and Claudia Bauzer Medeiros. XX Simpósio Brasileiro de Banco de Dados. October 2005.

Geo DCCs

Concerning domain-related applications, there are two papers describing Geo DCCs.

The first one is a preliminary overview:

Geographic Digital Content Components (pdf). André Santanchè and Claudia Bauzer Medeiros. VI Brazilian Symposium on GeoInformatics. November 2004

The second one is much more recent and introduces DCCs running over Web browsers:

Component-based Web Clients For Scientific Data Exploration Using The DCC Framework (pdf). André Santanchè and Peter Baumann. GIScience 2010. September 2010
